Root Canal Treatment: It doesn’t have to be a nightmare!

root canal treatment
A root canal treatment, as much as it can be dreaded by some, is a real life-saver for teeth with various dental problems.

Tooth pain can be really a nightmare for patients. When they make an appointment and see their dentists, dentists offer solutions for their problems. Infections that happen at the center of the tooth can be disastrous pain. For this situation, dentists use a treatment called a root canal, in other words, endodontics.

Root canal treatments are generally not painful procedures. When they are done properly, this procedure can save your tooth that you would have lost otherwise. This is why it is an important procedure in order not to lose a tooth in your mouth.

Why Root Canal Treatment is Important

Following tooth decay, leaky fillings, damage, and harm to teeth as a result of various traumas, including falling and crushing, there might be an infection at the center of the tooth. This infection is caused by bacterias that are trying to invade the tooth. They can invade the tooth and decay it.

In the end, you might lose your teeth because of those bacterial infections at the very center of the tooth. This is why root canal treatments are important. They cure the teeth and fix them to help you get rid of the infection so that the invasion can stop, and you can save your tooth.

When It is Used

When your dentists use X-rays and see a bacterial infection damaging the pulp, then they use root canal treatment to cure your tooth. If the bacterial infection is not stopped, then the bacteria can multiply and spread, and eventually, the pulp will die. Bacteria will continue to spread and multiply until your tooth dies.

There are some symptoms of a pulp infection. Patients might feel pain when they are eating or drinking hot and also cold drinks and food. They might also feel pain when they are chewing and biting some food. And obviously, if they are experiencing a loose tooth in the mouth, this can also be a symptom of pulp infection inside the tooth.

If the infection is not handled at this point, then it will evolve and the general symptoms mentioned above will cease because your pulp dies. But in fact, the infection spreads through the root canal system. Following this, you will also start to experience some symptoms again; again pain when chewing and biting.

Also, patients might feel a swelling tissue in the gum near the problematic tooth. There might also be a facial swelling arising from a root canal infection. You can also spot darker color dots and patterns on the surface of the tooth.

So, in order to not get caught in this system, it is always good to see your dentist if you experience a toothache. Because when your tooth is infected with bacteria, and they reach the pulp, the pulp cannot be healed by itself.

You might think that if we can use antibiotics only, and the answer is no. Antibiotics are not suitable to treat root canal infections by themselves.

How Root Canal Treatment is Applied

A local anesthetic is used for the patients before the root canal treatment. The first thing to do when applying root canal treatment is to remove the bacteria. This can be done by removing the bacteria from the root canal system. And this is where the treatment is named after.

Following the removal of the bacteria from the root canal system, it is filled and then the dentist seals the tooth with a crown or a filling. Generally, the inflamed tissue around the tooth will heal by itself.

Considering all, the whole process is generally painless and similar to the experience for the patients having a filling. The success rate of root canal treatment is very high. And after the root canal treatment, the tooth can survive up to 10 years.

How to Recover from Root Canal Treatment

Following the treatment, you should look after your teeth and generally your dental health (you can have a look at our blog post about oral care for deeper knowledge). You should refrain from biting solid foods, especially during the procedure. After the final stage, the restored tooth should feel pain-free.

But you should also be careful for a few more days since they can be still sensitive. Our dentists at Smile Team Turkey suggest some painkillers, like paracetamol and ibuprofen, to the patients who are experiencing some discomfort in their restored tooth or area. And if the pain is unbearable and swelling occurs, you should get another appointment with your dentist. But generally, patients do not experience problems afterward and during the procedure.

Toothache can be really painful for the patients. Early appointment with your dentist when you have a toothache can save the life of your tooth. If the bacterial infection occurs inside the root canal of your tooth, it can erode your tooth to death. So to prevent this, root canal treatment is done by your dentist to save your tooth.

Root canal treatment is not a painful surgery or complicated procedure. So you should not feel any pain during the procedure or afterward. Therefore, an early understanding of the reasons why you experience pain in your tooth is important. Make sure to consult a dentist when you experience a toothache immediately, then if needed, root canal treatment can be really successful and you can save your tooth!
